The process of finger-jointed wood joints

Finger jointing is an advanced woodworking technique that involves joining short pieces of wood together to create long, strong and straight pieces. This is done by applying and gluing zigzag joints at the ends of the wood. The joint is extremely strong and barely visible, making the wood perfect for structures with high demands in terms of load-bearing capacity and stability.

  1. 01

    Preparing the wood

Before the wood can be finger-jointed, the pieces are carefully selected and cut to size. This ensures that all pieces fit perfectly and allow for a uniform connection.

  2. 02

    Creating the finger joints

A zigzag or comb-shaped profile is applied to the ends of each piece of wood. This specific shape, known as a “finger joint,” increases the surface area for bonding and results in an exceptionally strong connection.

  3. 03

    Gluing the joints

A high-quality wood adhesive is applied to the finger joints. This bond is extremely strong and barely visible, making the wood perfectly suited for structures requiring high load-bearing capacity and stability.

  4. 04

    Assembling and pressing the wood

After applying the adhesive, the wood pieces are joined together in a press. The pressure in the press creates a seamless and strong bond, allowing the glue to fully cure.

  5. 05

    Sanding and finishing

Once the adhesive has cured, the finger-jointed wood pieces are sanded and finished to create a smooth and aesthetically pleasing surface. This makes the wood suitable for use in structures where both strength and a polished appearance are essential.

Finger-jointed wood products for the prefab and timber trade sector

Finger-jointed timber offers a solution when standard timber is not long enough for your project. It is perfectly suited for load-bearing structures, where strength and dimensional stability are key. Our customers in the prefab industry frequently use finger-jointed spruce for, for example:

  • Roof trusses and beams: the long, straight beams provide a sturdy support structure that can withstand high loads.
  • Wall panels and façade structures: finger-jointed timber provides the strength and dimensional stability required for prefab walls and façades.
  • Floor and roof structures: thanks to the extended lengths and strong joints, finger-jointed timber is perfect for large floor and roof surfaces.
